What is Genius Hour?

Picture
The concept of the Genius Hour was born from Google’s 80/20 principle, which allows its engineers to spend 20% of their time working on any pet project they want that might help develop the company. The idea is simple: allow people to work on something that interests them, and motivation and their productivity will increase. Gmail and Google News were created by developers during their 20% time.

What happens in class?

In class on Wednesday, students will be responsible for completing one year-long project of their choosing. Genius Hour Projects (GHP) should be designed, developed, and built by the student with the time they are given in class every Wednesday.

Little to NO money should be spent.

What are the requirements?

Students will be responsible for completing a year-long student chosen hands-on project. Genius Hour projects (GHP) should be designed, developed, and built by the student with the time they are given in class every Wednesday.

This project is designed to allow students to explore their individual interests and talents outside of our classroom curriculum while helping them to grow as future community members.

Typically, Genius Hour Projects must be completed along with community service hours. However, due to Covid-19, all community service requirements will be waived this year.

All Genius Hour Projects will be due May 3rd, 2021.

What if my project fails?

Picture
The ultimate goal is not for a student's Genius Hour projects to be successful.

The ultimate goal if for the student themselves to develop the skills they need to figure out what their genius hour project needs to be successful.

For them to develop skills such as grit, perseverance, determination, and intrinsic motivation. All while following the engineering design process. Learning how to define their problem, research, brainstorm ideas, develop solutions, test solutions, and then restart the process when their first solution did not work the way they wanted it to. All without giving up.

The number one questions is - will it effect their grade?
A final presentation is required, however, it is based on their learning, not if the genius hour is project is successful. So, the answer is no, as long as they can prove they followed the engineering design process throughout the year.

Final Presentation ~ What do students have to turn in?

Is your child stuck and having a difficult time coming up with ideas? This was show in class but maybe watching it with them will spark a conversation!
